Baden Casino Operetta at Morbisch Baden Rosarium
The beautiful Spa Town of Baden is situated only 16 miles from Vienna. To the North and West are the Vienna Woods, and a luscious wine growing area of over 150 vineyards lies to the South and East. Baden has a very relaxing and serene atmosphere all of its own. There is a rich variety of palaces and mansions; elegant shops and cafes; glorious parks and gardens; healing baths and springs and many sports and leisure facilities.
Music is everywhere in Baden - Beethoven, Strauss and Lanner all had villas here. Mozart, Liszt, Carl Ziehrer and Karl Millocker were all frequent visitors. Beethoven's residence is now a museum and amongst its treasures is the composer's own pianoforte, which is still kept in playing order and visitors are sometimes invited to play!
Each summer the famous Baden Operetta Festival draws thousands of visitors from around the world. Operettas are performed in the "Summer Arena", a traditional style theatre dating from 1906. The building has a unique feature that makes it a perfect venue for beautiful warm summer evenings - the roof is made up of sliding glass panels that can be rolled back so that the auditorium is open to the stars!
Operettas to be performed in Summer 2008 are:
"The Bird Seller" with music by Carl Zeller - this is one of the most delightful and melodious of all operettas.
"Schon ist Die Welt" with music by Franz Lehar - this is one of Lehar's later operettas written for the great tenor - Richard Tauber.
The Schonberg / Boubil musical "Les Miserables" is also being performed at the Stadt Theatre in Baden during July and August.
The 24 piece Kur Orchestra also performs free open air concerts of light classical music, including operetta selections, in the Kur Park 3 or 4 days a week throughout the summer (weather permitting).

The Lakeside Operetta Festival at Morbisch is about 1 hour's drive from Baden (transport included). This is probably the most spectacular theatrical event you will ever see! The open air arena seats over 6,000 people. The "floating stage" is enormous. Sets, costumes and lighting are absolutely stunning. World class soloists are backed by a large cast of professional singers, dancers and musicians. At the end of each performance there is an amazing firework display to music!
For 2008 the chosen operetta is "The White Horse Inn" - music by Ralph Benatzky and Robert Stolz. Words cannot express the atmosphere of this unique theatrical experience. It should not be missed!
