Bregenz and The Opera Festival

Bregenz is a small but bustling and cosmopolitan city located on the shores of Lake Constance at the most westerly point of Austria, bordering Germany to the north (Lindau) and Switzerland and the Alps to the south.

Bregenz is the home to the world renowned Bregenz Festival held in July and August each year.  Opera performances are held on the world’s largest floating stage at the lakeside.  (Pictured opposite - part of the set for Rigoletto 2021).

Apart from the main Opera, The Festival includes Orchestral Concerts by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performances of other Operas and dramas as well as smaller informal events and workshops.

For summer 2023 the main production will be Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini.

For summer 2023 we will be offering independent tailor-made holidays and short breaks in Bregenz, to include tickets to the Opera.

A stay in Bregenz can be combined with one of our other holidays if desired.

Bregenz, Lake Constance and the Opera Festival.

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German) is a 63km long lake that borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Ringed by pretty resort towns, it is a summer destination for sailing, windsurfing and swimming. The Bodensee cycle path encircles the entire lake in about 260km.

Bregenz, Capital of Voralberg, Austria

The Austrian city of Bregenz is the capital of the Austrian province of Voralberg.  It is a small but cosmopolitan city with a regular population of about 30,000 inhabitants.  In July and August each year visitors flock to Bregenz to visit the world renowned Bregenz Opera Festival.

Bregenz Festival 2023 Main Production

Opera performances of the highest standard are given on the largest floating stage in Europe on the shore of Lake Constance. In July and August 2023 the Bregenz Festival will feature a full-scale production of Puccini's Opera Madama Butterfly, one of opera’s most enduring tales of unrequited love. Puccini's poignant score follos the tragic tale of Cio Cio San, a young Japanese girl who falls in love with American naval officer Pinkerton, with devastating consequences.

What happens if I am forced to cancel my holiday due to Covid restrictions or other circumstances out of my control?

We want you to be able to book with confidence.  Whilst we very much hope that everything will go ahead as planned, we are in fairly uncertain times, so it is worth considering the following:

  • Wherever possible we will book accommodation on a flexible cancellation basis.  This may make the rates a little more expensive but should we need to cancel or amend arrangements any losses to you are minimised.
  • Ground transport arrangements such as transfers by 3rd party operators, rail tickets etc. are not normally booked until close to the time of the trip.  This means that fares / rates may vary slightly from those initially quoted at the time of booking.
  • Unless performances are cancelled by the organiser / venue there is usually no refund or amendment if tickets cannot be used.  Sometimes organisers / venues will show some leniency and offer an alternative date or voucher instead of a refund, but this is not guaranteed.
  • Flights can sometimes be amended, at extra cost, but cannot normally be refunded unless the operator cancels the flights.  Vouchers are sometimes offered in lieu of refunds.

With this in mind, we would advise ensuring that your travel insurance is adequate to claim for any unrecoverable losses that may be incurred in the event that you are forced to cancel all or part of your trip, especially with regard to enforced Covid restrictions by governments, transport operators or suppliers that are out of our control.  In the event of unavoidable cancellation we would do all we can to provide documentation to your insurers to support any claim.
