Bregenz and The Opera Festival

Bregenz is a small but bustling and cosmopolitan city located on the shores of Lake Constance at the most westerly point of Austria, bordering Germany to the north (Lindau) and Switzerland and the Alps to the south. 

Bregenz is the home to the world renowned Bregenz Festival held in July and August each year.  Opera performances are held on the world’s largest floating stage at the lakeside.  (Pictured opposite - part of the set for Rigoletto 2021).

For summer 2024 the main production will be Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber.

La cambiale di matrimonio (The Marriage Contract) Opera by Rossini with Gianni Schicchi Opera by Puccini
Orchestral Concerts by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as well as chamber concerts, drama, informal events and workshops.

For summer 2024 we will be offering independent tailor-made holidays and short breaks in Bregenz, to include tickets to the Opera.

A stay in Bregenz can be combined with one of our other holidays if desired.

 

 

Bregenz, Lake Constance and the Opera Festival.

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Lake Constance (known as Bodensee in German) is a 63km long lake that borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Ringed by pretty resort towns, it is a summer destination for sailing, windsurfing and swimming. The Bodensee cycle path encircles the entire lake in about 260km.  

 

Bregenz, Capital of Voralberg, Austria

The Austrian city of Bregenz is the capital of the Austrian province of Voralberg.  It is a small but cosmopolitan city with a regular population of about 30,000 inhabitants.  In July and August each year visitors flock to Bregenz to visit the world renowned Bregenz Opera Festival.  

Bregenz Festival 2024 Main Production

Opera performances of the highest standard are given on the largest floating stage in Europe on the shore of Lake Constance. In July and August 2024 the Bregenz Festival will feature a full-scale production of Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber

The Festival also includes orchestral concerts by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra; and additional Opera performances of Tancredi by Rossini,  La cambiale di matrimonio (The Marriage Contract) Opera by Rossini with Gianni Schicchi Opera by Puccini plus chamber concerts, drama, workshops and informal events.

Things to do in and around Bregenz

  • The city of Bregenz has many attractive buildings, shops and restaurants.  The Art museum is well worth visiting. There are public beaches with lots of walks along the lakeside.
  • Regular pleasure cruise services on Lake Constance allow you to visit many of the picturesque towns and villages around the lake.  It is possible to visit Switzerland, Germany and Austria in one day using the the lake ferries and still be home for dinner!
  • The cable-car up the Pfander mountains offers stunning views of Lake Constance and Bregenz far below.
  • There are excellent public transport links.  Take the train to the nearby Feldkirch, for example, a pretty mediaeval town with beautiful buildings and superb shops (including wonderful chocolate shops) and restaurants.
  • The Bregenzerwald has forests, alpine scenery and picturesque towns all within easy reach.

There is a good range of quality hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation in Bregenz, but being a small city the accommodation in Bregenz fills up quickly during the Festival weeks.  For this reason we recommend booking early so that we can secure the best available accommodation to suit your preferences and requirements.  The nearby town of Lindau, just 6km from Bregenz, and the wider Bregenzerwald region offer an extended selection of quality additional accommodation with good public transport links.

  • It is possible to combine your visit to Bregenz with a stay in another destination.  We will make all transfer arrangements for you between destinations.
